Also.

I had a another thought today on why I like Gallery 1988 so much. I was flipping through prints there on Sunday when I overheard this:

Dude waiting to pay at the counter: That’s a cool dog.

Cute yet unpretentious girl that works at the gallery: Yeah, he’s pretty chill. (Dog is lolling about on a chair behind the counter, clearly chilling.)

Counter dude: Is he always so mellow?

Gallery girl: Yeah, he’s pretty laid back. Also, he’s allergic to himself.

The three of us all lost it and laughed out loud at the ridiculousness of that statement. It has to be true though, right? Who makes that stuff up?

Back to Gallery 1988 for another kick-ass exhibit. I love that spot for being very current, and very local, and very cool, while maintaining a lot of diversity. (An apology to the hordes of Mark Ryden fans, but often at small, local galleries I get overloaded on the little kids with huge eyes.)

This time it wasn’t the Beasties, but a show centered around cult movies. Lots of Big Leobowski, a ton of Edward Scissorhands, but sadly, no Tommy Boy.

The show closed yesterday but you can see lots of the work here.

Beasties.

There’s an exhibit at Gallery 1988 right now called “Under the Influence: The Official Art Tribute to Beastie Boys”. I think the best part is the variety of mediums–there’s everything from painting, to stained glass, to stuffed dolls. The “influence” part is pretty varied, too. Some pieces are inspired by lyrics, others by the Beasties’ “look” and others are just really interesting portraits. Below are just a few of the ones I liked. I linked them to each artist’s blog or webpage. The show has a blog at http://beasties88.blogspot.com/ and you can see all of the pieces there.
